Pump It Up was written by Michael Hall, stars Leonardo Stella, Earl Gregory, and produced by Julien Deguines. Every scene in this film captivated me at TIFF.
Everyone involved should be really proud of this film
The casting, the mood, the visual and sound design, the music, and of course the symbolism of it all. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley couldn’t be better cast in the lead roles. Their dedication to their process and trust in their director was a given to me. Their weakness strips that away and leads to a very powerful fever dream.
It’s deeper than that
To me, this is a future cult classic. It’s body/psychological horror, so don’t expect scares. I found myself lost in thought throughout the film (as a 47 year old woman, this really spoke to me). But it’s also extremely fun to watch!
Take it seriously as a true work of art, but don’t do it at the same time, and you’ll have a blast
