Anora, a young prostitute from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries the son of an oligarch
Once word reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as her parents head to New York to annul the wedding. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian previews 12 films he’s screening at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous and strangely erotic Mercy.
A smartly written and funny script with a sweet story really kept me engaged for the first half of this film
At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said director Sean Baker played different sexual positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to show the actors what he wanted them to do. Featured: Anora (2024).
Then the film really becomes something else
which I appreciated, but ultimately not what I expected, or honestly really wanted. The pacing definitely slowed down a bit too much and I felt like the film had lost some momentum.
For her alone, I’d recommend watching it!
The final scene is exactly what I wanted to happen between the two characters, but the other main character is completely vilified, which I wish wasn’t the case. But Mikey Madison’s performance was one of the most convincing and entertaining I’ve seen in a long time.
