Plot
In 1980s Indiana, a group of young friends witness supernatural forces and secret government exploits. In their search for answers, the children uncover a series of unusual mysteries. Steve Perry, former lead singer of Journey, has said that the Stranger Things season 4 remix of Journey’s 80s hit Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) was done pretty much the way he originally wanted it to be done in the 1980s. Perry was so impressed that he even helped engineer the remix. In several episodes, people are seen “interrupting” someone talking on a two-way radio or CB – that is, one person is talking/transmitting while another person is transmitting to interrupt them, and then the other person hears the interruption and stops transmitting. This was done a few times on children’s CB radios and radios used by the police.
Eleven: Friends Don’t Lie
Those radios – CB and police radios from the era of the show – don’t work like that. If you are transmitting and someone else is transmitting, you will not hear them. Stranger Things’ opening titles and fonts mimic the film grain and look of the opening credits of the 1980 TV series. I feel this show will make an impression
Within the first 8 minutes of running, I could tell I had found something special here in Stranger Things. Its intriguing story delivers information at a great pace, and I never felt like I was getting confused or bored, and there were enough twists and turns to keep me interested. It also had some pretty great horror sequences and used flashing lights, while yes the normal noise fit the story so well, I was on the edge of my seat every time the crackle of electricity shot through my speakers and the lights flashed. The characters of the show are the real stars here, I love every single one of them. They were all great with surprisingly interesting flaws, and how they mixed and clashed with each other was fun to see unfold. They definitely help carry this show, although I would say the government antagonists on the show felt a little flat and underdeveloped, and not nearly as memorable.
God, I loved their choice of music
The production values are also quite good with beautiful cinematography, editing, lighting and sound. I would say the CGI looks a little obvious, and occasionally I noticed a few issues where scenes didn’t look quite up to scratch. However, I guess I’ve been spoiled with visual quality since Game of Thrones, so I take this criticism with a grain of salt as it certainly didn’t detract from the overall experience. All the place and style in places where it’s also great to see and feel real and interesting. Also, the way everything was shot expertly captures every moment and really helps bring out those moments in the story with more emotion. Stranger Things is one of those special shows that I stumbled upon and knew I was hooked upon discovering.
Unforgettable, thrilling, dark and spooky, Netflix knocks Stranger Things out of the park, 10/10
Its gripping dark story is expertly woven over the course of 8 episodes and I know I will be coming back to watch this one again. The ending is pretty well wrapped up with some loose story threads left hanging, with the promise of potential seasons, but the story is wrapped up pretty satisfyingly by the end. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping a dystopia, or making the world a better place, these women are at the heart of science fiction.
